Dogs don’t just enjoy play — they need it. Whether it’s a tug-of-war in the living room, a chase across the park, or a puzzle toy challenge, play is a vital part of your dog’s physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing.

At Pickles Pet Pantry, we believe enrichment is just as important as nutrition. And when it comes to dogs, play is enrichment — and it's also connection, confidence, stress relief, and joy.

Let’s dig into why play matters and how to make the most of it, for every type of pup.

šŸŽ¾ Why Play Time Matters

1. It Keeps Them Fit

Play helps dogs burn energy, build muscle, and stay agile — especially important for high-energy breeds or dogs prone to weight gain.

2. It Builds Confidence

Games like fetch (in moderation), nose work, and even tug-of-war help dogs gain confidence through interaction, especially rescue dogs or shy pups.

3. It Strengthens Your Bond

Shared play boosts trust and attachment between you and your dog. It’s not just fun — it’s quality time that tells your dog "you matter."

4. It Prevents Boredom (and unwanted Behaviour)

A mentally and physically stimulated dog is far less likely to chew the sofa or dig up the flower beds!

🧠 Play Is More Than Just Fetch

Here are different types of play to keep your dog engaged — especially useful for rotating routines or indoor days:

🧩 Enrichment Toys

Puzzle feeders, lick mats, and snuffle balls challenge their minds and slow down speedy eaters.

šŸ’” Pickles Tip: Try stuffing a lick mat with natural peanut butter & food from our PeterinaryĀ® range, then freeze it for long-lasting fun!

🧸 Interactive Toys

Tug ropes and treat-dispensing toys create shared experiences — perfect for building trust and burning energy.

🐾 Solo Play Options

Some dogs love playing independently! Look for durable chew toys, rubber balls, or soft squeaky friends

ā° How Much Play Does Your Dog Need?

Every dog is different, but here’s a general guide:

  • Adults – 30–90 minutes of mixed play, walks, and enrichment

  • Seniors – shorter, gentle play with mental stimulation (like puzzles)
